This show is from the maker of Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress, the script is from the same man who did Boogiepop Phantom.

It's not your average show, the title of "Paranoia" is really what this show is about.

A young boy on roller blades seems to roll around the city and whack people on the head with a baseball bat, and things don't seem to be the same after that.

Shounen Bat is back home...

Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Cops The police (civil servants) are the good guys in the battle against crime. Though they try hard, they are usually outclassed by super-criminals or criminal organizations in anime, requiring the help of special units or some lone hero. Detective It focuses on the efforts of the Detective, private investigator or amateur sleuth to solve the mysterious circumstances of a crime by means of clues, investigation, and clever deduction. The successful mystery film often conceals the identity of the perpetrator until late in the story, then adds an element of suspense during the apprehension of the suspect. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Horror The horror cinematic genre is characterized by the attempt to make the viewer experience dread, fear, terror, or horror. Often their plots involve the intrusion of an evil force, event or personage, sometimes of supernatural origin, on the mundane world and the consequences thereof. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo Tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Law and Order Where there is "wealth", there are criminals. It is up to the civil law enforcement, i.e. detectives, Police or Special Squads, to keep the lawless activities in the real world or in cyberspace under control.

Note: Do not confuse this with Military presence.
Original Work: New Not based on anything, the story is a new work, usually made up by the people involved in creating the anime. Generally if an original work (原作) credit is given, it will be to the studio, or director, or other members of the production team. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Sex Known as intercourse, the ultimate bond of love. Thriller The thriller is a genre of fiction in which tough, resourceful, but essentially ordinary heroes are pitted against villains determined to destroy them, their country, or the stability of the free world. The hero of a typical thriller faces danger alone or in the company of a small band of companions. The protagonist may be a law enforcement agent, a journalist, or a soldier, but typically he or she is cut off from the resources of "their" organization. More often the hero is an ordinary citizen drawn into danger and intrigue by circumstances beyond their control. (Source: Wikipedia) Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Tragedy Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society. Twisted Twisted indicates more than one abrupt change in plot or story. This derivation from strict linear storytelling usually makes these anime hard to follow, and at times even very confusing when several parallel plots intertwine. Violence Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one`s will on pain of being hurt.

some weird shit goin` on Scenes of this show point to insanely strange events which seem to be taking place; throughout its episodes, the show may or may not explain what is going on. Either way, many viewers will find that a succint and accurate way to describe the show is "WTF?", and the show`s explanations (or lack thereof) to the events will often be subject of heated debate. surreal Refers to things or occurrences that are generally bizarre or dreamlike, with the relentless capability of replacing reality through the eyes of the beholder. Surrealism is boundless, limited only by thought itself. the power of the media no description set yet twisted The world and the people in it just should not work this way. Morality, normal emotions and common sense have little place here.

This is not simply off-the-wall wacky, rather some of the actions and events in this anime are just plain wrong!
uncovering weaknesses in human nature By actions or dialogues one char will trick, surprise, or otherwise provoke other characters to react - not in the positive light they would like to be seen in - but in the way they (deep down) really are. E.g. a char accidentally speaks his quite despicable thoughts out loud.

The work of the same author who has a very original signature. The whole series is made in the similar way (and the whole settings feels very similar) - it focuses to explore deep psychology that is behind our characters and actions. Also the fact that it's difficult to distinguish between reality 'seen by naked eyes' and reality that is determined by your surroundings, reality and delusion and/or dream - simply it's difficult to say which reality is the real one.

The same author directed both those works and his original signature is easily and well noticeable. Another introspection (and successful one) into the dark deep consciousness and mainly subconsciousness of the human being. Also the fact that it's difficult (if not even impossible) to distinguish between reality and delusion and/or dream.

This series can be described quite simply - breathtaking, interesting, twisted, original and difficult. Kon Satoshi's works are all unique and extremely twisted because they make an introspection into somehow forbidden area - into our (sub)consciousness. This whole series successfully depicts pathologic phenomena of human psychology and it's slow development. Thanks to this main aspect it's very twisted and to someone it can seem like something absolutely crazy ... well, it is. The main plot, which is hidden within single episodes, is difficult to grasp and follow and almost impossible to completely understand with all its details and symbols. Don't expect stereotype by contraries expect unexpected.

'Must see' for anyone who likes psychological and twisted works with a little bit of conspiracy where you have to use your own head to understand the whole piece.

This is really a very good anime! In the middle of the anime the story gets little complicated, but still understandable! And in the end everything is explained! I recommend this anime for the people that really like conspiracy and paranoia animes. My favourite character is Ikari Keiichi - he is the Chief Police Officer!

I was watching this and I felt really intrigued but then it just got ridiculous and confusing. Supernatural thriller.. maybe, but then it turned into some totally outlandish BS. Not what I was expecting. Dropped because by episode 10, I was completely lost.

Paranoia Agent (PA) was Satoshi Kon’s attempt to make a series based on his weird ideas for a story and the result is not as powerful as his movies. What can I say, his talent is not that good for long viewing as it is for short bursts of craziness. Not that PA is a bad series or anything; it’s just that the bait of the story can’t keep the fish on the hook for 13 episodes without eventually baffling most viewers in a bad way. Sure, it is made to be confusing and mysterious as hell but even that [...]

Humor was simply one of many scents used to hide the smell of mediocrity and as shown with it`s ratings it has done that well.

Story

For the first four episodes the plot builds really well and it raises your anticipation to see the next. It follows a couple detectives as they search for an individual going around at night hitting unsuspecting people with a bat. The show has a eerie feeling that it does great work on when it decides to bring it out. With the co [...]

Overall
Paranoia Agent was a surreal thrillride, and one of the best animes I have ever seen.

Animation
Animation is pretty ordinary... Not that impressive or memorable.

Sound
The surreal theme of the show owes a lot to its excellent soundtrack.
Voicework is also great, and sound effects do their job.

Story
At first Paranoia Agent is a pretty ordinary looking street assault anime, but that only scratches the surface of one of the most [...]

Story-20/20-The whole series keeps the tense atmosphere.. While there is a lot of weird events.. everything is comprehensible.. The series gets very complicated.. but everything is able to be clearly understood.. I was always amazed and how everything happend.. and still made PERFECT sense... The story progress in sections.. the first couple episodes is about the victims.. and then we build on each incident as the detectives study more and more about each case.. then the storyline ignores them a [...]

Beethoven and Tchaikovsky had problems. So did Edgar Allan Poe. I’ve written my best poetry while high as a kite. So did Rimbaud. Sylvia Platt committed suicide. There was something odd about Robert Mapplethorpe. There’s definitely a correlation between genius and instability. ….Perhaps Satoshi Kon is the exception. Oh, don’t get me wrong. Two cents say he’s a goddamn drug addict. Whether or not he’s a genius, however, is up for debate.

Sometimes there are moments in anime when vie [...]

Paranoia Agent...From the makers of such psycotic shows as Perfect Blue and Boogiepop Phantom. This show is very confusing. If you hated Perfect Blue, don`t watch this. The horror aspects are nary here, only the weird confusing thoughts this anime puts in your head.

Animation: Very good. Some liberal computer CGs and realistic character designs make this anime a 10 in the animation category. I like the lighting effects and the use of different backgrounds to distinguish on [...]

Scary, cynical, funny, suspenseful, fulfilling. Paranoia Agent is as good as it gets.

Animation: Beautiful and dark. I especially liked the bat boy`s every assault, and the facial expressions. What wasn`t as good was the fight scenes. They were just cheesyrific, like in episode 7 and in episode 12. Overall, the backgrounds and movements were amazing, since they carried the image of suspence and horror and weirdness very well. The opening is a work of art. It features the m [...]

To those who are cornered by their worries and have nowhere to go, he can appear anywhere and at any time. He is out in the wild Shounen Bat … is out there somewhere!

Paranoia Agent is for sure a marvellous anime especially if you like Serial Experiments Lain, Boogiepop Phantom, or other philosophical / psychologic shows. Even if you don’t like those I can ensure you Paranoia Agent is kind of different, at least in the beginning when it starts as mystery [...]
