The year is 2071 AD. With the systematic collapse of the old nation-states, a mixed jumble of races and peoples were driven out of their terrestrial Eden and spread to the stars, taking with them the now confused concepts of justice, freedom, violence, and love. New rules were established, and a new generation of bounty hunters came into being. People referred to these bounty hunters as "cowboys".

Meet Spike Spiegel and Jet Black, a drifter and a retired cyborg cop who have started a bounty hunting partnership. In the converted ship The Bebop, Spike and Jet search the galaxy for criminals with bounties on their heads. They meet a lot of interesting characters, including the unusually intelligent dog Ein, the bizarre hacker child prodigy Ed, and the voluptuous and vexing femme fatale, Faye Valentine.

Note: Originally aired on TV Tokyo, but after 12 episodes the show was cancelled due to the violence portrayed in the Cowboy Bebop world and violence in Japanese schools. The final and also the 13th episode on TV Tokyo was a compilation episode where the characters provide a philosophical commentary and end with the words: "This Is Not The End. You Will See The Real "Cowboy Bebop" Someday!" Four months later, WOWOW started to broadcast all 26 episodes of Cowboy Bebop. The ordering was different with completely new episodes mixed in between episodes previously broadcast on TV Tokyo, including a new episode 1.

Categories

Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Bounty Hunters A bounty hunter captures fugitives for a monetary reward (bounty). For example the crew in Cowboy Bebop are bounty hunters. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.

Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy.
Cyberpunk Cyberpunk focuses on computers or information technology, usually coupled with some degree of breakdown in social order. The plot often centres on a conflict among hackers, artificial intelligences, and mega corporations, tending to be set within a near-future dystopian Earth. Detective It focuses on the efforts of the Detective, private investigator or amateur sleuth to solve the mysterious circumstances of a crime by means of clues, investigation, and clever deduction. The successful mystery film often conceals the identity of the perpetrator until late in the story, then adds an element of suspense during the apprehension of the suspect. Fantasy Imaginative or fanciful work, especially one dealing with supernatural elements and themes. Gunfights Fights where two or more parties are firing guns at one another. Human Enhancement The enhancement of humans can take various forms: It can be something comparatively non-intrusive as a power-up drug, a form of machine implantation or cyberization ("SAC Solid State Society"), or outright - possibly atrocious - genetic manipulation ("Ao no 6-gou"). Plot-wise enhanced protagonists in anime usually have to pay a price for their enhancements, be it physical or mental. Martial Arts Characterized by extensive fighting scenes employing various types of martial arts, meaning systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat. Music Music anime generally revolves around people concerned with music in their everyday lives. In addition they often adhere to certain genre conventions, the emphasis on training and practice in preparation for competitions, characters desire for self improvement, and pursuit of a specific goal. This is not unlike the Sports category. Original Work: New Not based on anything, the story is a new work, usually made up by the people involved in creating the anime. Generally if an original work (原作) credit is given, it will be to the studio, or director, or other members of the production team. Other Planet The anime will fit this category if some or all of the action takes place on another planet which is supposedly in the same universe as Earth, not a complete fantasy world; usually there has to be some concept of space travel. The Latin name for Earth - Terra, would also pass the condition of being in the same universe as Earth. Basically, even mentioning of Earth existing or having existed would be enough. Although Moon is a moon, it also qualifies as Other Planet. Plot Continuity Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.

A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.

A truly random plot is highly discontinuous.
Post-apocalyptic An anime that takes place on future Earth (or it could be an alternative universe) after a major cataclysm has occurred. World War III, an alien invasion, plague, global warming or some other general disaster are common themes to build a post-apocalyptic world upon, where the effects were severe enough that mankind barely survived. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. Sci-Fi Science fiction stories usually focus on how situations could be different in the future when we are more technologically advanced; due to either our own achievements or having met with other civilizations whom we have learned from. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Shipboard Beam me up, Scotty! Space stations (think Death Star) also count. Basically, this category is to tell if the setting takes place onboard a spaceship in space. This category is not applicable if the spaceship lies on a planet and never actually gets into space. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Space The final frontier. Space Travel Space Travel usually refers going to space or travelling there with or without a spacecraft. There are different forms of space travel like Interplanetary travel, Interstellar travel or Intergalactic travel. Since it isn`t possible to travel faster than light, most anime series involve some sort "sub-space travel mechanism" as a way to travel faster than light. Thriller The thriller is a genre of fiction in which tough, resourceful, but essentially ordinary heroes are pitted against villains determined to destroy them, their country, or the stability of the free world. The hero of a typical thriller faces danger alone or in the company of a small band of companions. The protagonist may be a law enforcement agent, a journalist, or a soldier, but typically he or she is cut off from the resources of "their" organization. More often the hero is an ordinary citizen drawn into danger and intrigue by circumstances beyond their control. (Source: Wikipedia) Time: Future Anime that fall under the future category are the ones that have a society that could have originated from ours. In most cases it should go hand to hand with sci-fi since we expect the future to consist of advanced technology, however, in the case where it`s explicitly stated in the story that the anime takes place "x years into the future", the state of technology doesn`t matter as long as it`s long into the future. The anime can be set in an alternative universe not tied with our own, as long as it has a futuristic feel to it.

This category sports quite a lot of anime, mostly stemming from SciFi, but not necessarily only from there.
Tragedy Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society. Violence Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one`s will on pain of being hurt.

antihero The antihero (sometimes `antiheroine` as feminine) is generally considered to be a protagonist whose character is at least in some regards conspicuously contrary to that of the archetypal hero, and is in some instances its antithesis. classic It may be a good animation, soundtrack or story or all of them at once or serious lack of them. Whatever the case, this anime deserves its place in the history of Japanese animation. dogfight Not the sort of ‘bark-bark’ or ‘woof-woof’ sort of dogfight.

Dogfight refers to combat engagement between aircraft (or space craft), often one on one. So in short: jets, planes, missiles, machine guns and maybe a kamikaze or two.
episodic The episodes do not present a continuous storyline, but an episodic one. The characters and setting stay the same, and each episode (or sub-episodic segment) presents a new short story. femme fatale The phrase is French for "deadly woman". A femme fatale tries to achieve her hidden purpose by using feminine wiles such as beauty, charm, and sexual allure. Typically, she is exceptionally well-endowed with these qualities. In some situations, she uses lying or coercion rather than charm. She may also be (or imply to be) a victim, caught in a situation from which she cannot escape.

She often leads men into compromising, dangerous, and deadly situations.
great action sequences no description set yet great directing no description set yet great opening This anime contains a wonderful use of animation and/or music/vocals during the opening theme.

Usually, especially the music is quite catchy.
great soundtrack The anime soundtrack is noteworthy. hacker Individual who breaks into other peoples` computers. heavy smoking Someone in the story consumes more than one supply of their preferred method of inhaled substance by the end of the episode/series. heterochromia Heterochromia Iridis is a medical condition, where an individual has at least an eye with more than one colour or two eyes of entirely different colours. instrumental OP Just music in the opening — no lyrics (vocals) at all. Itano Circus The Itano Circus is named after Itano Ichirou, a Japanese animator, and refers to a highly stylized and acrobatic method of depicting aerial combat and dogfights in many anime, particularly the Macross series, where it was utilised by Itano for the first time and was ground-breaking.

The Itano Circus is characterized by detailed, fluid shading of the mecha, the close-range acrobatic moves the duelling fighters make in combat, as well as twisting contrails left by fighters and missiles. It is also commonly used in specific reference to an attack where a mecha or spaceship launches a large swarm of missiles with meticulously animated spiralling smoke trails and erratic trajectories.
jazz no description set yet laid-back protagonist The main character doesn`t get excited easily, they seem most at home when doing nothing. With half-shut eyes and near-constant slouching, they sometimes look like they are ready to just fall asleep. Often used to bring greater contrast to the occasions that they do get riled up for.

Examples include Asakura Yoh from Shamen King, and Gintoki from Gintama.
makes you laugh and cry While watching this series you can expect moments when you fall off your chair laughing, and moments when you will be thankful that there is a pack of tissues nearby. It`s worth mentioning that tears can be caused by touching/drama moments (e.g. Clannad, Hanada Shounen Shi) or "mighty"/overwhelming moments (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann). Mars The fourth planet from the sun in the solar system.

Popular sci-fi setting for human colonisation efforts.
must see classic It`s a classic, YOU MUST SEE IT! neo-noir Neo-noir is a style often seen in modern motion pictures and other forms that prominently utilizes elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media that were absent in films noir of the 1940s and 1950s. retro sci-fi no description set yet sense of foreboding The anime starts off quietly, everything seems to be fine, but from episode to episode the signs that something ominous is about to happen increase. E.g. a typical mystery setting. space western Space Western is a subgenre of science fiction that transposes themes of American Western books and film to a backdrop of futuristic space frontiers; it is the complement of the science fiction Western, which transposes science fiction themes onto an American Western setting. tomboy A female character that refrains from displaying the usual girlie clichés (e.g. shrill high voice, damsel in distress syndrome, overly prude, air-headed, klutz, wears skimpy clothing, etc.) by acting more mature and "manly".

Among "boys" she is considered a competent friend, she is simply "one of the boys". Among "girls" she usually plays the role of a protector.
travelling adventure The main protagonist will usually travel from place to place, accompanied by a group of eccentric, quirky characters, experiencing many adventures — often one per episode.

These series share the same director and thus the stylistic feel of the episodes is similar in composition. Top-notch storytelling, even if the content's setting is vastly different.

In both shows are bounty hunters (although in Trigun they aren't the main cast ...), you can find there 'higher and pure' ideals behind the scene and actions of (some) characters and in both shows the main characters are chased by their unfinished somehow dark past that they are trying to resolve (or unsuccessfully flee). It also takes place in an alternative world (in Bebop in more worlds) that you can describe as 'Wild West'. And in the end you'll find that it's not only about the 'blues' and 'love&peace'.

Explanation by Zotov on Saturday, 09.10.2010 20:01

It's all about the blues, baby.

I agree, bebop was the first series I thought about after watching black lagoon. Maybe it's the small friendly crew thing.

Explanation by vulgaros on Sunday, 25.04.2010 00:03

I get a similar vibe out of this anime. I see the same high quality, refined & masterfully choreographed action scenes, in general, and the shoot-outs in particular.

A must see for anyone starting out in the realm of action or sci-fi anime. Definately in my top five list with Trigun, Berserk, Outlaw star and Hellsing for action I would say.

Simply put, one of the best anime shows ever. It manages to avoid many anime stereotypes that push away first-timers and crafts an extremely engaging world with unique characters and clever plot lines. If someone was to watch one, and only one anime series, this should be it.

This anime pretty well kicked! Awesome animation especially for the time. Plot development and character development progressed nicely--the characters, with the exception of Ed, provide the user with an amount of believability. My only complaint with this anime was the ending. However, watch the first 22 episodes and the movie, and you will not regret it!

Cowboy Bebop: the real folk blues...
an anime masterpiece that instantly became a modern classic!

A powerful story, exceptional animation & music, deep characters that keep it real, and a setting only fit for a true space cowboy. One of the first shows that got me into watching anime that'll remain one of my favorites.

COWBOY BEBOP (1998)

This is a hard to judge anime as it has many elements that make it good next to other elements that you need to tolerate if you need to consider them great. Although it is still considered top 10 of all times for many after all these years, there are many more (me included) that had a very hard time accepting all th [...]

Cowboy Bebop is probabaly one of the best anime shows on Earth and I`ll tell you why. The artwork is amazing and so is the animation and is good for old-schoolers to enjoy. The animation makes you feel like you`re back in the 70s along with the music. It`s jazzy and has its blues from the 50s-60s I think.

Story:

The story focuses on a duo of bossy bounty hunters who happen to be poor dogs. They need money so this guy named Jet (who`s the owner of the ship) leads a man named [...]

Cowboy Bebop: 10-year anniversary review special of doom.

Cowboy Bebop, for the uninitiated, is an anime-original 26-episode science fiction anime that had its original run in 1999, ending on this very day 10 years ago. Made by studio Sunrise and conceived by director Shinichirō Watanabe, it was intended to serve as a fusion of different genres, as well as a fusion of media; anime with jazz music. The anime follows Spike Spiegel and Jet Black, a pair of interste [...]

[br][br][br]I`ll come out and say it straight from the start: Cowboy Bebop is my favorite anime series of all time. No anime series will ever top Cowboy Bebop (for me at least). I`ve altered some categories to better describe this series. [br][br]Animation: [br]The animation of Cowboy Bebop is noticeably dated by today`s standards. It doesn`t looks low-budget or lacking in detail, it just doesn`t have the same polish you would expect from any dramatic series ten years its junior. Cowboy Bebop ma [...]

Cowboy Bebop is a mysterious, `ultra-cool` anime which succeeds because of its superb ability to combine drama, humor, and so much more into a beautifully structured futuristic sci-fi setting.

The only real negative to CB is its overly hip attitude, which slightly turned me off.

But, Cowboy Bebop really is an incredible series and easily one of the best anime I`ve seen in my long long run of anime watching.

Animation - Top notch

Cowboy Bebop, centers around it`s 3 protagonists; Spike, Jet and Faye [in no particular order], who just happen to be DIRT broke bounty hunters. Bebop is set in a futuristic period with a lot of cool new technology and nice old school fashion.

Animation

Spectacular, there is no way it deserves anything but a 10 looking at the backgrounds and the technology. Almost every single episode comes at you correctly with the same type of "fluid" animation as the one before it. < [...]

So why is Cowboy Bebop the greatest anime of all time?? Why did Cowboy Bebop reinvent the genre of anime?? Why did Cowboy Bebop blow everyone away?? There are Four reasons. The deep characters, The phenomenal music, The animation and amazing Director. From the very first episode, amidst all the action and excitement, you can tell that this is a story of melancholy.

No one is a good innocent guy. Everyone is emotionally scarred, and have pasts that are questionalble. And their [...]

This anime, with its awesome jazz/blues soundtracks, terrific character devlopment and superubly made vehicular, hand-to-hand, and gun battles is worthy of being on the top 10 best animes of all time.

The only drawback to the series is the episodic nature of the anime: most episodes have little to do with previous or subsequent episodes besides a little bit of character devlopment or maybe some background.

However, it is partly because of the episodic nature of the anim [...]

Cowboy Bebop is one of my favorite’s anime. It has got great music, stunning animation (still - despite all years) and fine characters (such as: Vicious, Spike, Faye and so on).
Yesterday I ended my journey with Bebop one more time. And I must admit – I wasn’t bored even for a minute.
This show (because this anime is presented in this way) is spectacular in all respect aspects.
What is the main reason, which makes this anime different from the others?

The Plot[ [...]

SIMILAR TO: Trigun; Samurai Champloo

Slick, stylish, unique, fun, fantastic. This is the first and BEST in what I`ve dubbed "The Holy Trilogy" of anime series. (The other members being Trigun and Samurai Champloo.) These three anime series` have a distinctly similar feel to them, and share many positive qualities. (Yes, this opening statement is featured in my reviews for those two anime series too.)

This is a series that has the word "Cool" written all over it. You can [...]
