* Based on Abe George and Kakizaki Masasumi's Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin manga.

Around 10 years after World War II, a group of delinquents are sent to the Shounan Special Reform School. Upon arrival they meet Sakuragi Ryouta who becomes their guide to adulthood. Depending on each other to survive the brutal conditions at the facility they make a promise to one day all meet up on the outside.

Note: The first episode was distributed online through Bandai Channel starting 02.04.2010 until 09.04.

If you're into seinen, this is a must see. Excellent character development for each protagonist, and every plot line and side-story is neatly resolved. Pacing is also very good - the first half of the season has a lot of suspense, whilst the second half relaxes a little and becomes more dramatic. The characters win some and lose some, which keeps the tension at an appropriate level and the story from becoming predictable.

Anime this well-written come along rarely, so definitely give it a try!

Its a classic...Older generation (Over 18) will appreciate it more because of its themes. Rarely would I say something is a 10 but this is up on that list. Every episode is worth crying for, cheering for, and hoping for each character. I made the mistake of skipping this when it initially came out. PLEASE DON'T DO THE SAME!!!

Honestly one of the sickest, yet most brilliant manga and Anime ever. I seriously didn't know that Anime could bring on such terror, sadness and have such nail biting scenes. Beautiful art and a classic for many years to come.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
I think deadman wonderland should have followed suite with rainbow.

it's quite an emotional experience. I even don't feel uncomfortable to confess that it made me cry several times. So real, so earthly cruel, so true, so touching, so captivating that you mustn't skip this series.

I highly recommend this to male viewers who are a little more mature and thoughtful than the typical anime fan. The series is tragic but has a good ending in my opinion.

Well it was great! The writer's "Cool men" theme came across quite well (If you're comfortable with it that is). However it had it's flaws as an anime, one being the character's attraction to sequences of bad luck or unfortunate events (ie. Mario) in order to drive the story line forward. Yet this isn't too bad as it's still a superb story. I also had a deep fear that this anime would remain "detained", forgive the pun, and never make it out of the jail like setting. However at around episode 14 I believe the story became even better because it proved my fears wrong. Overall I rate this a 9/10 for the genre and an 8.25/10 overall as an anime, so I definitely recommend it!

Emo youth fighter turbo. Seriously, get a kleenex box if you watch this. It's about juveniles being harrassed by adults while trying to achieve their live's dreams.

SOMETHING UNCOMMON Rainbow could have been a great social drama if it was serious. It remains somewhat above average for not being about schools, lolis, videogames, ecchi, and superpowers, things that we got sick and tired of seeing. Despite its dark atmosphere, it’s not mature, since it constantly rubs the victim card in your face. I mean, sure, all dramas are meant to make us feel sorry for the characters by being powerless before the problems they face, but subtlety is what separates mediocrity from brilliance, which is something Rainbow lacks entirely.
